Cranial surgery
Stereotactic Brain Biopsy
Pinpoint sampling of a deep brain lesion for diagnosis.
Overview
Using image guidance, a small needle is directed through a tiny opening to sample tissue from a lesion that cannot be safely removed. The pathology result then guides further treatment.
What it treats
- Suspected primary brain tumours in eloquent or deep locations
- Suspected lymphoma or metastatic deposits
- Atypical inflammatory or infective lesions
How it is performed
Performed under general or local anaesthesia with sedation. A frame or frameless neuronavigation system plans the trajectory; a 10–14 mm scalp incision and burr hole are used.
Recovery
Most patients are discharged the following day. Histology is usually available within a week.
