Spinal surgery
Lumbar Spine Surgery
Relieving back and leg pain from the lower spine.
Overview
Lumbar surgery treats nerve compression and instability in the lower back. The aim is usually to relieve leg pain (sciatica) and restore function; back pain alone is treated surgically only in selected cases.
What it treats
- Lumbar disc herniation with sciatica
- Spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication
- Degenerative spondylolisthesis and instability
How it is performed
Microdiscectomy, decompressive laminectomy and instrumented fusion are the most common procedures. Microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques are used where appropriate.
Recovery
Hospital stay is one to four days depending on the procedure. Walking is encouraged from day one; return to seated work is usually within two to six weeks.
